So, the ugly girl has got some legs. ABC has ordered up a full season of “Ugly Betty.”
The Devil Wears Prada knock-off, although inspired by a Columbian telenovela, has averaged to come in second place among the most highly valued 18-49 age group of Thursday nights at 8pm. Survivor is more popular, but what else is new.

I happened to bump into Ugly Betty because I missed the 2 hour premiere of LOST on ABC. I found out that ABC lets you go to their website where they keep the last 6 episodes of their core shows. I saw Ugly Betty there and was hooked when I saw the show. What makes it a show I love is that Betty represents a large portion of the population that was not born looking like a poster boy or girl. Betty represents the average person just trying to get by. By contrasting Betty with the pretty people who are actually shown as being the ugly people in the show because of their jealous and back-stabbing nature, we see the ugly animal in the "pretty" people and I find that great. I for one am tired of watching TV shows that just feature pretty girls and handsome men. That is not reality, its called network ratings or the OC :). Ugly Betty is a show for the masses and I feel it will be around for a while. I do want to see Betty strike back at some point at some of the people who make fun of her. That would make my day!

Not knowing anything about the show, it was America Ferrera who hooked me, because she's fabulous & I love her. While I found it funny for the most part, I *really* had a problem with the overwhelming gayness of Vanessa Williams' assistant and, even more so, Betty's nephew, because the characterization (or caricaturization, to invent a word for punny purposes) really seemed to toe the laughing-with/laughing-at line. It also seemed like the weirdness of the Fey storyline would doom the show. However, now that I know the whole thing is based on a soap, I can appreciate the show's campiness a lot more, and after tonight's episode (which I thought was the best & funniest), I'm feeling better about the gay boys' treatment, since they had a sincere moment together that did not end with a punchline at their expense. Go Betty, you rock!!
