Promotion for Charlie Gibson = Bad News?

May 23, 2006

We like Charles Gibson. He’s a pro — and he knows how not to look like a dork doing cheesy morning TV segments about fondue. But the announcement that he’s being named anchor of "ABC World News Tonight" leaves us a feeling rather melancholy.

If we’re reading correctly between the lines — “Elizabeth Vargas is going on maternity leave and returning to co-anchor ‘20/20,’ and Bob Woodruff “looks forward to contributing to (Gibson’s) broadcast as soon as I am able” — this confirms that rising star Woodruff is not coming back to work anytime soon following his accident in Iraq.

Another question: What does Vargas’s transfer mean for women anchors? She couldn’t attract a crowd? They’re mad that she went on maternity leave? And, how does CBS expect to break the only-men-can-anchor stereotype with Katie Couric?

The truth around ABC is that Woodruff isn't coming back. We've all known that from the beginning. But really, who is going to say, "oh, they guy is f-ed up and will never be on TV again!"

Then again, Christopher Reeve almost walked again. So anything is possible.

Best wishes to Woodruff. He's another reason we should GET THE HELL OUT OF IRAQ.

Ultimately a good choice I think, particularly for Charlie Gibson. I hope he gets a big raise, especially considering the network booted him (and Joan Lunden) off GMA several years ago and then, after their ratings dropped, they asked him back. The best revenge is doing well.

But what about the women? Will they never get the anchor chair? I know Katie is getting it... but she's going to flop. And they are not going to blame her. The "people upstairs" are going to blame the Internet, and changing demographics.

I love seeing Charlie on GMA, and I too hope he gets a big raise for all he does at ABC. He is the new face of ABC, like it or not. I love Elizabeth Vargas, don't get me wrong. But Charlie's been doing a great job for years and it's gone unnoticed until now.
All the best to Bob Woodruff and his family for a speedy recovery - I wish you all well.
